Hello everyone! I’ve been meaning to write this review since the day the box came in, but you know how life can get, and my book reviews take priority! But it’s finally here! And hopefully in time to help some of you decide whether you want to subscribe to Owl Crate for the first time, or renew your subscription for March 2017! So, because the above picture is kind of small, here is a larger version of it, and I will list everything from left to right below.

  1. Letter from the author – this is always a neat part of Owl Crate which I enjoy, and it makes the whole experience feel more personalized for sure. It makes me feel just a little closer to the author!
  2. Book info card – while these are not necessary to experience the book properly, I find that I enjoy these cards just because I like to display them on my bookshelf.
  3. owl crate 3Owl Crate info card – these are usually also quite pretty and nice for displaying on le bookshelf! I also like that the back gives some back story and information about each item which was included in the crate.
  4. Playing cards mini notepad – while this little notepad is cute, I’m not quite sure what I’ll use it for quite yet. Maybe I’ll write some common Japanese and Korean phrases in it and carry it in my purse while I’m on my trip in May? Maybe, maybe. I also like that these notepads are made out of recycled casino playing cards!
  5. Cinnamon doughnut lip balm by Geek Fire Labs – this was an interesting addition to the crate, but while I like the idea of it, I do not actually like the smell of this lip balm and therefore cannot wear it. I’m not quite sure what I’ll do with it yet. I do like that it contains all natural ingredients though.
  6. Sneak peek audio card for Caraval and The Star-Touched Queen – this was a neat addition, but one which I did not make use of because I’d already read Caraval by the time I ordered this crate, so I had no interest in listening to the audio version of the book. I was also planning on reading The Sar-Touched Queen a while ago, and therefore felt no need to audio book it.
  7. owl crate 1The Night Circus inspired tote bag designed by Evie Bookish – this tote bag was one of the 3 main reasons why I ordered this particular Owl Crate, as I love Evie Bookish’s designs! I have yet to use this tote bag in public, but might be more likely to do so when it’s warmer out.
  8. Hardcover copy of Caraval by Stephanie Garber – the main reason why I ordered this particular Owl Crate. I had already read this book, but as a digital verson. I loved it, and I knew that I absolutely had to have it as a hardcover version. When I guessed that this would be the book included in the Feburary 2017, and I thought that there might be a chance that Owl Crate would distribute a special version of the book (like they did with Heartless by Marissa Meyer), it convinced me that I should order ASAP.
  9. Card signed by author – it’s neat that I now also have Stephanie Garber’s signature! Although I would have prefered if it was inside of the book, I know that that would have been a tought one to pull off for Owl Crate (mainly a lot of of books shipped back and forth, which could get quite expensive).
  10. Circus themed sticky notes – these are cute stickies! I just haven’t found a use for them yet, mainly because they do not match the theme of my bullet journal right now. I only use stickies for my journal when I’m not in school (and I don’t think I’ll be in school again for a bit).
  11. owl crate 4Circus inspired candle by Frostbeard Studio – the second reason why I ordered this particular Owl Crate! I’d been wanting a book-inspired candle for a while, but find that it’s not worth it to order them due to the shipping to Canada. Sometimes the shipping costs more than the candle itself! It’s kind of ridiculous. But when I heard that a candle by Frostbeard Studio would be included in this box, I knew that this might be my only chance to own a bookish candle! And I’m so happy that I ordered this box, because the candle smells AMAZING! It’s too bad that it’s a mini, because I really love the smell, but understand that a larger candle would have cost Owl Crate quite a bit more due to the size, and shipping-wise as well.
  12. Circus inspired pin (not pictured) – I don’t really collect pins, or put them on anything of mine, so I gave this one for my bestie. Sadly I gave it to her before I took this photo, and was therefore unable to show it in any of the photos for you guys! IT was cute though!

This is the third Owl Crate which I have ever received. The first one I received in a giveaway from the lovely Lady of the Library on Instagram. The second I ordered myself, and was very disappointed with (which caused me to cancel my subscription). And to be quite honest, I ordered this specific Owl Crate because I guessed what the book would be (and I was going to buy it anyway….and because there was a chance that the book might be a special edition). The other two reasons, as I mentioned above, are the candle by Frostbeard Studio, and the tote bag by Evie Bookish. I knew that it would cost me more to get all of that separately than it would in the Owl Crate, and I would get a few more goodies in the process as well. Other times, however, I just cannot justify spending around $50 CAD or more on this crate, especially because I did not like the 2 books which I received in the other 2 boxes and actually ended up giving them away. Some of the items were also not a good fit for me. But anyway, enough rambled. Here are my top 3 from this crate (although you may have already guessed what they are by now):

  1. Caraval by Stephanie Garber
  2. The Cirque de Reves candle by Frostbeard Studio
  3. The Night Circus inspired tote bag by Evie Bookish

I really hope that my rambles have been helpful for some of you who are debating whether to sign up for this crate for the first time, or who are deciding whether to keep their subscription or not. While the box costs quite a bit to get to Canada, I think that the shipping to the U.S. would cost a lot less. But on the other hand, if you live farther away than Canada, it may cost a lot more to get it shipped to you. I would definitely recommend that you look at all of the past boxes on the Owl Crate website, and also check what the shipping would be for you before you decide to sign up! I’m not in any way hating on Owl Crate, and I’m sure that many subscribers absolutely love the books and products they provide. This is my personal experience with this box, and past boxes, and would be regarded as my opinion, and not the most common, or public opinion.

Loved this box to the moon & back Flavia! Your top fave 3 items from this box are also mine. I was so excited for the lip balm only to also find the scent to be unpleasant. I gave the little notepad (so cute) to my 5 yr old & she’s been using it for newly learned sight words. I wish the candle was full size 😩😩😩 haha! Great unboxing! 💕

I do like reading subscription book box reviews because although I can’t justify purchasing one for myself (for starters, I’m too picky about what I read), I like seeing all the neat stuff inside them 😛 This crate actually comies with more goodies than I thought!
